Review of The Christmas Tree Farm by Laurie Gilmore

The Christmas Tree Farm by Laurie Gilmore

(Approx. 92k words – written in third person limited.)

Description:

“Kira North hates Christmas. Which is unfortunate since she just bought a Christmas tree farm in a town that’s too cute for its own good.

Bennett Ellis is on vacation in Dream Harbor trying to take a break from both his life and his constant desire to fix things.

But somehow fate finds Ben trapped by a blanket of snow at Kira’s farm, and, despite her Grinchiest first impressions, with the glow of the fairy lights twinkling in the trees, and the promise of a warming hot chocolate, maybe, just maybe, these two lost souls will have a Christmas they’ll remember forever…”

My review:

I am giving this book a rating of 4 out of 5.

This is the third book I’ve read in the ‘Dream Harbor’ series (US spelling), though it could easily be read as a standalone.

** Anyone who knows the Dream Harbor series will already be aware of this, but for readers who haven’t encountered the series before, I think it’s worth mentioning that this book is considered a ‘spicy romance’. Therefore, I will provide a content warning upfront and recommend an adult-only audience for The Christmas Tree Farm! **

I’ve found the tone and style of the Dream Harbor series to be a great palette cleanser after reading ‘heavier’ novels with darker themes, yet I enjoyed this book the most of all the stories I’ve read in this series so far (which could have something to do with the fact that cute dogs are part of the plot!). There’s plenty of spice, which usually puts me off, though I found it was handled more tastefully in this novel than in previous books of this series.

The Christmas Tree Farm definitely has ‘Hallmark Christmas movie’ vibes with its small-town setting and fun cast of characters! I love the book cover as well, which conveys the tone of the story perfectly.

Throughout this novel, the point of view switches between main characters Kira and Bennett. However, I’d say Kira could possibly be considered the protagonist because Bennett’s choices and actions seem directly influenced by Kira, whereas she seems to have the capacity to shift her focus elsewhere. Both Kira and Bennett were likeable characters, and I appreciate that their mutual love of dogs becomes part of the plot!

An element of mystery helps add a layer of intrigue to the story as well. And I won’t share any spoilers, but I really enjoyed the outcome of this ‘mystery’ and how it unfolds through Kira and Bennett’s interactions in the end.

In terms of setting, the way the Christmas tree farm is described sets the scene of a cosy yet isolated rustic farmhouse with plenty of potential for improvement – echoing Kira’s character arc, in that her character development benefits from Bennett’s efforts to fix things around the farm. This isolated rural setting contrasts nicely with scenes set in the local Gilmore Girls-esque town, which conveys a sense of warmth and community that Kira needs Bennett’s influence in order to appreciate. As for the writing style, I found this book incredibly easy to read! Plus, the ‘playlist’ at the beginning and occasional illustrated text messages enhanced the light-hearted tone of the story.

I read this book around Christmas time, which I think added to its whimsical charm! Though I imagine anyone searching for a comforting romantic comedy featuring beloved tropes (like ‘grumpy sunshine’ and ‘forced proximity’) would enjoy reading The Christmas Tree Farm by Laurie Gilmore at any time of the year.
